When I read Without Reservations earlier this summer, the author mentioned Freya Stark as a favorite travel author. I thought I would try one out -- but I couldn't really get into it. Maybe Afghanistan of the 1960's is just too far away for me to engage with? The photos (black and white plates) give you an idea that the landscape was quite stunning, but I skimmed through most of the text.
